To help you understand a little more about tyres and the services that we provide, we have created this information section to help you.
When should your vehicles tyres be changed?
Once your vehicles tyres have reached the minimum legal depth of 1.6mm across the central three quarters of the tread circumferentially, they must be changed immediately. Beyond this point, and not only will the performance and handling of your vehicle decline, but more importantly the safety. When you think that the contact area of your cars tyres on the road surface is roughly the same size as the palm of your hand, you can begin to appreciate why good tyres are important. Your vehicles tyres should also be changed if there are signs of damage. We can check your vehicles tyres if you are at all unsure.
|
The image above shows the treadwear indicators (arrowed) which are incorporated into every tyre. These are set at a height of 1.6mm. When the tread on the tyre becomes level with these, it is time to change the tyre.
Why and how should your vehicles tyre pressures be checked?
Running the correct tyre pressure is an important factor in both the safety and lifespan of your vehicles tyres. Pressures should be checked regularly when the tyres are cold. The correct tyre pressure for your vehicle can be found in your vehicles handbook, or on a tyre pressure information table.
|
The diagram above shows how incorrect inflation causes your vehicles tyres to wear unevenly.
Why should your vehicles wheels be balanced?
There are two reasons for balancing your vehicles wheels. If the wheel and tyre assembly isn't in balance, uncomfortable vibrations will occur through the vehicle, and the steering and suspension components will wear prematurely. We can check the balance of your vehicles wheels free of charge, and if necessary, re-balance them for a small charge. Thanks to some specialist equipment, we have the ability to balance various wheels in various ways, such as the modern Peugeot wheels with the solid centre, and a special balancer program allows us to hide the balance weights behind the spokes of your wheels.
Why is the alignment of your vehicles wheels important?
Incorrect wheel alignment can result in rapid, irregular tyre wear, and in extreme cases it can affect the handling and safety of your vehicle. We can check the alignment of your vehicles wheels free of charge, and if necessary, make an adjustment for a small charge.
|
The image above shows a tyre that was fitted literally weeks before this happened. As you can see the outer edge of the tyre (right hand side) is almost new, yet because of the incorrect wheel alignment, the inside edge (left hand side) is completely smooth, resulting in the need for a new tyre.
